Main Applications
Electronic-grade cleaning (post-CMP cleaning): In semiconductor wafer manufacturing, tartaric acid serves as a metal chelating agent in cleaning solutions used after copper/cobalt interconnect chemical mechanical polishing (CMP).
Electroplating and surface finishing: Used as an auxiliary brightening and leveling agent in acidic copper and nickel plating baths; it refines grain structure and enhances adhesion between the coating and the substrate, making it particularly suitable for PCB (printed circuit board) via metallization and decorative plating of automotive parts.
Green textile fixing: Serves as a substitute for traditional formaldehyde-based fixing agents; its polyhydroxy structure enables cross-linking with active groups on fibers under acidic conditions, and it is used in the anti-wrinkle finishing of wool and silk.
Food and beverage (acidity regulation and stabilization):
- Winemaking: This is the largest single market for tartaric acid. It is used not only to adjust the pH and total acidity (TA) of grape juice but, more crucially, to inhibit potassium hydrogen tartrate (KHT) supersaturation, preventing tartrate crystallization (tartrate precipitation) at low temperatures and ensuring clarity after bottling.
- Baking leavening agent: Reacts with sodium bicarbonate to produce carbon dioxide. Compared to other acidulants, tartaric acid reacts more rapidly; it is commonly used in baking powder and soda water to impart a porous structure and a unique"acidic-aromatic"aftertaste to pastries.
- Confectionery and jams: Its strong chelating properties allow it to complex metal ions and prevent sucrose crystallization (graininess); it also converts sucrose into glucose and fructose, enhancing the pliability and water retention of the confectionery.
