
Acidic solvents are indispensable media in chemical industries, laboratory research, and electronics manufacturing. Beyond their excellent dissolving capabilities, their unique acidic properties render them irreplaceable in specific chemical reactions and cleaning processes.
Broadly categorized, acid solvents fall into two primary classes:
Inorganic Acid Solvents: Primarily comprising sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, phosphoric acid, and hydrofluoric acid. These acids are predominantly strong proton acids, exhibiting extreme corrosiveness and reactivity. While not typically used as conventionally “inert” solvents, their potent acidity positions them as central agents in numerous critical applications.
Organic Acid Solvents: These acids are generally weak but combine solvency with moderate acidity, making them more commonly used as practical solvents. The most representative include acetic acid and formic acid.
It is important to note that acidic solvents, particularly highly corrosive inorganic acids, require extreme caution during handling. They exhibit strong corrosive effects on skin, eyes, respiratory tracts, and metal equipment. Therefore, operations must be strictly conducted in well-ventilated environments (such as fume hoods) while wearing full personal protective equipment including gloves, goggles, and acid-resistant clothing. Additionally, their storage and transportation must adhere to strict chemical safety management protocols to prevent leakage, volatilization, or hazardous reactions with other substances.
Despite these safety risks, acid solvents remain indispensable “chemical blades” in modern industrial systems due to their exceptional chemical reactivity and broad application versatility, continuously driving technological advancement and industrial development.
