Main Applications

1. Natural Gas Dehydration and Drying: This represents one of diethylene glycol's most significant applications. Owing to its strong hygroscopic properties, diethylene glycol is extensively employed in the dehydration treatment of natural gas and other industrial gases, effectively removing moisture to prevent pipeline corrosion and hydrate formation.

2. Synthesis of Unsaturated Polyester Resins (UPR): Diethylene glycol serves as a raw material in the production of unsaturated polyester resins. These resins find extensive application in fibreglass products, coatings, artificial marble, buttons, and decorative materials, imparting excellent mechanical properties and chemical resistance to the end products.

3. Plasticiser: In certain cellulose resin and polyurethane systems, diethylene glycol functions as a plasticiser, enhancing material flexibility and processability.

4. Solvent Applications: Owing to its excellent solubility and stability, diethylene glycol serves as an efficient solvent in ink, textile printing, and adhesive industries, improving product uniformity and process performance.

5. Antifreeze Component: Whilst diethylene glycol possesses some low-temperature fluidity and can serve as an antifreeze component, its use is significantly restricted due to its toxicity to humans. It is gradually being replaced by safer alternatives.

6. Tobacco Humectant: Within the tobacco industry, diethylene glycol functions as a humectant, helping maintain tobacco's moisture content and suppleness. This prevents cracking and enhances the smoking experience.

Historical Issues and Safety Alerts: There have been instances where diethylene glycol was improperly substituted for glycerol or propylene glycol, particularly in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and food additives. This led to multiple severe poisoning incidents and even major public health crises. Consequently, its use is now strictly regulated, with its unauthorised substitution in products involving human ingestion or contact being expressly prohibited.
